Tongue Thrust Therapy: An Oral-Motor Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment |
Tongue Thrust Therapy: An Oral-Motor Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment,
Robyn Merkel, M.A., CCC-SLP
Robyn's SMILE Program (SysteMatic Intervention for Lingual Elevation) is an effective way to help children remediate articulation errors including persistent lisps, interdentalized productions of t-d-l-n, and distortions of sh-ch-r. The program targets the root of the problem, which is often a tongue thrust disorder. By combining muscle-based, swallowing, and articulation therapies, Robyn saw her clients' progress rates improve - and so can you. Note that these techniques are only appropriate for children 7 years of age or older who possess the cognitive ability to follow directions and monitor their own swallow patterns.
